First Shift is a dystopian prequel to Wool that explores themes of government control, memory manipulation, and loss of freedom through a compact but conceptually dense narrative. The book contains some violence and disturbing themes around forced medication and authoritarianism, but the violence is not graphic. This is more appropriate for older teens interested in thought-provoking science fiction rather than younger readers.
